Re-Booting Your Fall Wardrobe

How to Choose the Right Boots for the Right Occasion

Every woman needs to have at least one pair of classically styled boots that she can wear year-round. But this fall’s fashion-forward boot trend is calling for more than one pair in more than one height.

Ankle boots, or “booties,” are being seen everywhere from the media to the mall, from catalogs to the catwalk, from the runway to the red carpet. Equally popular this season are classic knee-high boots and show-stopping, over-the-knee versions.

So how do you know when to wear which version and with what? Here are three types of seasonal boots with hints on how and when to wear them.

1. Ankle boots or “booties”

This is one of this season’s trendiest looks, and the trend shows no signs of abating. Booties end at or slightly above the ankle. Although you’ll see sexy, more sophisticated high heel versions on the runway, flat-heeled ankle boots are more practical for everyday wear. And they come with a variety of embellishments such as lacing, patterns or buckles to fit every personality type.

No matter what height you choose, booties worn with this fall’s maxi-length skirts and dresses create a classic combo for the season. And if you’d like to show off those gorgeous gams, ankle boots look fabulous with leggings, tights, skinny jeans or short skirts and dresses.

2. Medium- or knee-high boots

These classic versions stop at mid-calf or just below the knee and never go out of style. Whether you choose a retro-style slouchy boot or a classic riding boot, this knee-high footwear is the perfect accessory to help you transition your wardrobe from summer to fall. They’re great with summer staples like sundresses or casual denim cut-offs. They’re also stylin’ with autumn staples like leggings, skinny jeans or simple fall skirts and dresses.

The style of medium-high boots you choose can dictate the personality of your outfit. A classic riding-style boot looks great with leggings or skinny jeans, while slouchy versions or cowboy boots create a more casual look with leggings, tights, jeans or short skirts and dresses. Any mid-calf-high boots in a fine leather or suede, no matter what their heel height, offer a more formal look.

So do you wear your clothes tucked into your boots or out? Skinny jeans or leggings look great tucked into mid-rise boots. Or you can wear your boot-cut jeans or casual slacks under a calf-high boot, with just a peak of the boot showing.

3. Thigh-high or over-the-knee boots

This edgy look is rocking the 2014 high fashion world. These over-the-knee boots are true show-stoppers, so let them be the star of the show by wearing them with an outfit that’s simple and tailored. Pair them with skinny jeans and a long sweater or menswear shirt. Or show them off with a short dress and tights. But remember to keep your outfit simple–sans embellishments–and keep jewelry and other accessories to a minimum, if you use them at all.

So now that you know all your options, are you ready to re-boot your fall wardrobe and kick your footwear up a notch? You bet!
